Memorial Day Travel Style

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!  I just flew back to New York from business in St. Louis.  Took the earliest flight I could to get a jump on the holiday weekend.  Luckily it wasn’t too crowded.  When we arrived at Laguardia the terminal was packed.  Phew, I missed the holiday rush.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu & Sabastian Masuda

sabastian masuda dokidoki designer

Must take a departure from the 40 x Tokyo spree today to celebrate what turned out to be a very epic Sunday.  Was already super excited to go to the Kyary Pamyu Pamyu concert… but to also met the mastermind behind the Harajuku brand 6%DOKIDOKI – whoa!  Fair warning to my friends that these photos are going up anywhere I can post them cause I am so psyched.

Masuda-san was in Kinokuniya to check out a small art installation related to the brand’s new mook celebrating their 18th year!!!  He was informed that a bunch of cute girls all dressed up in Harajuku fashion were upstairs in the cafe, so he came up to take photos.  How cool is that.  Inside the mook is a tote bag with the famous Colorful Rebellion collage.  I didn’t pick one up as I want to save money to buy something directly from their store when I am in Tokyo next week.  If you want to learn more about the mook check this out:

lolitas invade grand central

My buddy got sick so I reached out to some of the NYC lolita’s to hang with for the show.  God these girls have fun!  Grace {shown center} pulled off a Manhattan magic act.  She transformed her 2 friends into Lolitas in the middle of Grand Central.  Just when you think you have seen or done it all, New York has another surprise in store for you.  Wish I had a before photo.

on our way to kpp concertBefore you know it we were off to wait in the mile long line wrapping around the Best Buy theater.  As usual, our fashion attire attracted a fair amount of attention.  But who cares.

kpp world tour nycThe show was amazing.  Just amazing.  What fascinated me was how completely diverse the fans were. There was a mosh pit, kid-you-not, at one point and on the other side of the floor a contingent of really cute frilly girls jumping up and down screaming.  What an amazing performer to be able to bring such diversity together.

masuda watching kyary

Oh yeah, and check out this fan… she had all the moves in check!  By dumb luck I was sitting right behind Masuda (#^.^#)  And yes, yes he always has his arms crossed like that.  So cute.

kyary pamyu pamyu nyc concertIt has been a long time since I have been to a concert and had so much fun.  Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has literally skyrocketed since 2011.  So glad I got to enjoy this amazing moment in her blossoming career.

Perfectly Pastel Tea Party

pastel fine china tea service

I missed out on a wonderful opportunity when I was a teenager.  My grandmother had what can only be described as a spectacular tea service collection.  Towards her last days she passed it along within the family, and I did receive a few pieces but didn’t appreciate them.  In the end they never followed along with me as I moved on eventually landing here in beautiful NY.  My appreciate for the finer things sadly didn’t hit until my very early 30’s. What I wouldn’t give to have an armoire full of jems like those above now.

floral party cakes and cookies

I imagine I would want to served something like this if I were to start my own tea service collection.  Dainty floral pastries to coordinate with the elegant designs of the cups and saucers.  While I have a ravaging sweet tooth, frosting and marzipan are not my cup of tea.  So perhaps…

macarons cherries chocolate strawberries

Yes, definitely.  Floral macarons, sugar and chocolate coated strawberries, candied cherries.  Oh my.

I think it all started with my love for paper dolls in the 70’s and 80’s.  But as soon as I became proficient in Photoshop in the 90’s all hell broke loose with creating my own customized avatars.  StorTroopers and Poupee Girl have been the sites that I have had the most fun with. But there is a new kid on the block that I can’t resist – imadeface.

avatar shotokan stortrooper

A good friend of mine that I worked with at Morgan Stanley put me onto Stortroopers.  At the time they had a Harry Potter edition – man I wish I had saved some of those.  This particular mash up I made using some of the base Trooper parts, plus my own additions to make the Karate gi (uniform).  Then I borrowed the background from Yoritsuki.  The creations of Hybrid Works are incredible.  Do check em out.

avatar naruto leaf ninja stortrooper

After Harry Potter I went through a big Naruto phase.  That lead to this avatar based on the Konoha Leaf Ninjas. This was so much fun getting all the little details right: the leaf on the headband, the swirls on the sleeves and the kunai (knife) holder around the leg.

avatar candyland poupee

Poupee Girl is a far more complete avatar so there isn’t much to add in Photoshop.  There are certain clothing items that I don’t have enough “ribbons” to pay with which become my muse for ‘shop work.

avatar imadeface app

Which brings us current with imadeface.  Its an interesting departure from my previous loves.  There is only so much you can really change without losing the fantastic simplicity of it.  They don’t yet have the best hair options for me, so I did get to make a few touch ups.

Do you have a favorite site or app that you like to make personal avatars with?  Would love to hear about it.

Ahcahcum Muchacha – Limited Edition Variety Box

About a year ago I became addicted to the brand ムチャチャ⇔あちゃちゅむ. It all started with their Spring Mook which contained the most awesome cat face tote bag.  Mine has seen a lot of action since then.

Oh Kinokuniya, you did it again.  I went in for notebooks and left with the new Ahcahcum Muchacha Limited Edition Variety Box!  It is purrrrrfect!  There are some nice photo’s of the box set on Amazon Japan. It was released on Jan 31 and if you are quick there was a massive stack at Kino in Bryant Park as of Friday night.

I paid $36.30 for the set and it includes:

  • 16×22.5cm purse – that can be carried by its handles or slung over the shoulder by the chain
  • 50x50cm scarf
  • hardcover book that contains 24 postcards featuring the brand’s unique designs

You can check out more items from the brand over at ZOZOTOWN. I am secretly wishing that their next Mook or Box Set will include one of their rabbit designs.

Snow in the Morning

trees covered in snow during winter

Woke up this morning to a beautiful winter scene.  We’ve been lucky to have several nights lately, where the snow falls while we sleep.  And when the sun comes up it looks as if everything has been sprinkled with a covering of powdered sugar.

9 Grams

Tempted to get some of my Instagram photos turned into magnets with StickyGram. Several of my fave bloggers have posted their results and they are super cute.  The question now is which 9 would I have printed?  Here is what I am thinking:

Check out: I Spy DIY’s Magnets & Scathingly Brilliant’s Magnets.

The alternative and equally tempting option is Prinstagram and their Tiny Book.  Quoting the site, each book has 24 photos and you get 3 books with each order.  How cute is this:

What do you think? Is it worth $15 for the magnets or a better deal to get the 3 books for $10?

But wait there’s more…

I saved the very best for last.  What I really want is a custom iPad case that I can deco out.  So along comes  Casetagram and their slick iPad case!  I am on the fence about getting one. Apparently it is supposed to work with Apple’s Smart Cover… but I can’t tell for sure. I definitely need an option that covers the screen from my clumsy streaks.

Be My Valentine

valentines greetings

Happy Valentine’s Day!  While Pinterest this week was chock full of heart inspired clothing, romantic drinks, and many a DIY craft, my Tumblr dash went old school.  The simple search of “vintage valentine” had me strolling down memory lane.  I remember bringing in a decorated box filled with store bought, and rather cheesy, messages to hand out to my classmates.

vintage valentine greeeting cards

So hard to pick favorites.  I am a sucker for the delicate and detailed Victorian cards.  But this year the 1960’s variety captured my fancy.  Credits: (1) (2) (3) (4)

Snowboarding the Catskill Mountains

snowboarding in the catskills

With all the snow Nemo left us, me and about everyone else within a 3 hour driving radus of the Catskills landed at Hunter Mountain on Sunday.  With a foot of new powder how could one resist.  The lines were insane, but we got a few runs in.

driving in nyLook at them clouds.

I think half the fun of the day was the drive. Seeing everything all covered in snow and ice was spectacular.  My friend and I even spotted two, yes count em two, rainbows!  My trusty iPad wasn’t exactly up to the challenge of capturing those unfortunately.
