Project Complete: Melty Mozart Angelic Pretty Remake

Angelic Pretty dress remade into Ouji coordinate

A pair of scissors, a stitch ripper, a few yards of brown fabric, some braid trim and a whole lot of courage were applied to Angelic Pretty’s Chocolate Quartet and this is the result. As I described in my last post, your main piece to attend the AM Skyline Tea Party was required to be one of the 4 brands who would be represented. Somehow I knew sweet ouji could be done, but trying to find anyone else who made such radical alterations was impossible online. Deep down I was having all sort of feels that he would be turned away since it was not the original design. All my worry turned out to be for naught.

getting to see your design with asuka and maki ... priceless

Every second of anxiety was rewarded with the out pouring of happy reactions to the look. THANK YOU ALL!! I loved that Asuka and Maki didn’t make a fuss. They had the most perfect of Japanese masks on the entire time. But there were subtle clues that they were pleased and hopefully flattered. Their adorable associate Rin-chan certainly was very diligent in taking several photos of all the details (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

By far the best reaction was Midori running, not walking, across the room with phone in hand to ask Adel for a selfie. ٩(ó。ò۶ ♡)))♬ I managed to catch the best parts on film.

So many photos from the party!!! I can’t believe that it has almost been two weeks since then. I am still reliving all the wonderful memories on Facebook with new posts that are trickling in. We met so many wonderful and amazing people which is honestly the most rewarding part of this fashion. Yes its about the clothes, but that is just what breaks the ice and brings us together.

making alterations to chocolate quartet to make ouji style

The majority of the vest was made from fabric from the JSK. The body of the vest was taken from the skirt. I reinserted the original JSK collar. The remainder of the skirt was used to make the back tails of the vest. From the salopette I reused all of the buttons and did my best to mimic the double breasted panel. Part of the skirt was used for the tails on the front of the vest. And the ribbon from the salopette was attached to an Innocent World tie in a mash up of bow-tie meets cravat. Oh and the little button panel from the back of the salopette also made its way onto the back of the vest.

I tried really hard to not make too many additions. But I needed a few elements to create balance. Especially important since the border print is so strong. The addition of the 3 melty chocolate pieces felt just right to me to establish harmony; two panels on the front of the vest and one on the back.

While I adore how this turned out there are so many things I would have done differently if I was starting from first principles. If I had just the original fabric it would have been nice to keep the border print only on the tails of the vest instead of also on the body. But you work with what you have. At the end of the day I am over the moon pleased. I really hope you like it too ෆ⃛(ٛ⌯ॢ˃ ɪ ˂ٛ⌯ॢ)

The Ultimate Challenge: Angelic Pretty Ouji Transformation

By now, if you know me on other social media channels or were at Anime Matsuri, this is old news. However for everyone else, let me tell you a story.

how to convert Angelic Pretty into an ouji coordinate

Once upon a time in the distant land of Houston high above the clouds in the Skyline a tea party was to be held. At this tea the EGL royal court would be in attendance. The queens Misako and Midori as well as her majesty Akira; the great mage Minori and Yura who moves in the shadows; the vampire tamer Shiva cloaked in black, Hasegawa of the poisonous atmosphere, and Chinatsu the transformer of time. Ah, but there was a pair that had our hero’s certain attention. Yes, the enchantresses who bring girl’s dreams true, Asuka and Maki were to be in court.

If one could prove themselves worthy, they would be granted a secret key and allowed passage to join their comm in this most extravagant of times. The hero must be strong of heart and fend off other foe when surviving releases. One so valiant that they shine with the glow of brand.

And so our story begins. For our hero’s challenge was far beyond that of all that came before. For the enchantresses magic only worked on those destined to be princesses alas but not for a prince. That was not until a maiden from the distant shores of the Beast Coast had a vision, a vision of a new future, a future where brand knows no limitation.

its important to preserve as many original details

OK, I gotta stop there. Just can’t do it!! Summary of story: Tea Party Rule = Must Wear Brand. Problem? Unable despite multiple tries to get hands on Boz cloak. Aside from said cloak nothing from Atelier Boz, Metamorphose, Putumayo or Angelic Pretty fit my American male friend. Solution? Alter brand!!

OMG guys, I fretted over this from the moment we got our tea party tickets. Which was months. I stalked Closet Child, Lace Market, the brand online shops, used shopping services but it just wasn’t happening. And that was a sign that I needed to try a new approach. That was about the time Angelic Pretty SF started their end of year sales. Bingo!! Chocolate Quartet came into focus.

The print is fairly neutral as Angelic Pretty goes and has strong military lines throughout the series. So I snapped up the ivory JSK and Salopette as well as the chocolate OTKs. I knew I would need to design on the fly and work with what fabric I could get out of the two pieces. But there wasn’t a specific vision in mind.

My goal was to preserve as much of the original as possible but ensure that the finished look was undeniably masculine. Also, to use as few additional materials as possible. The end result needed to be the main piece of the coordinate, an obvious alteration true to the original, devoid of girly, and ensure a good fit. Oh, and no pressure what-so-ever knowing that the two people responsible for the dresses I would be tearing apart would be there to see the remake. Yeah, its not like those aren’t two of the designers I admire most on the planet or anything like that.

To hear how our hero’s story ends you’ll have to stay tuned. Got about a million photos to edit post-con (/●◔∀◐●)/ But don’t worry I won’t leave you hanging for long. Hugs!!

Tea Party: NYC Alice Meet

nyc lolitas alice tea party 2014

I had sooooo much fun this past week. Yesterday was like the cherry on top! So many photos from Fashion Week, Alice in Wonderland Ballet and the Alice Tea Party. Since Wonderland is an appropriate metaphor for the adventures, and things are not as they seem, lets check things off in reverse order shale we.

19 lovely ladies and 1 dapper gentleman participated in our NYC Alice Meet Tea Party on Saturday. We reserved the Looking Glass Room at Alice’s Tea Cup Chapter 2. All any of us could think about when we arrived was the food. Many of us came from the ballet and were famished.

Xiaoyu made the cutest toy soldier hat ever!!! It was the perfect finishing touch for her Angelic Pretty Loyal Rosette salopette. She had marvelously cute soldier gloves too.

alice tea party lolita raffle winner

I was cutting things incredibly close and only the night before made a gift to give away as a small raffle prize. Using unbleached muslin, some lace, pearls and beads I magically whipped up a White Rabbit fascinator/pin. Alexandra pulled the winning card from the deck (4 of hearts for the record) and it made my day to see how excited she got when she opened the bag and found out what was inside.

My friend Asumi and her friend are visiting from Japan and both dressed up in lolita for their first time. They looked so cute!! Next time I am in Tokyo I think we will pay a visit to Maison de Julietta and hit the Butler Bar to continue our Kawaii adventures.

Angela decorated a straw hat with beautiful roses. I love how creative and artistic everyone is!! She coordinated it with an old school Baby, the Stars Shine Bright one piece. I wish I got a close up of her broach too which was handmade and featured an adorable rabbit.

lolita tea party gift bags and raffle prize

In addition to the raffle prize I ordered Alice themed gift bags and Eat Me cookies from two Etsy artists. They turned out really great and both were super about making sure they arrived on time and safe-and-sound. I hope the girls enjoyed them. It just wouldn’t have felt like a proper tea party if everyone didn’t receive a little something to take home as a momento.

I really hope everyone had a good time. Confess that I am pleased with myself that I pulled this off without a hitch – and for the first time being a hostess/organizer. Feeling pretty inspired to do it again. I learned a lot so have all sorts of ideas and things I can improve upon next time *✲゚*。✧٩(・ิᴗ・ิ๑)۶*✲゚*。✧

Tea Party: Kimura U @ Anime Next

lolita tea party with kimura u

Its been several weeks but I am still star struck from meeting Kawaii Ambassador and Fashion Designer, Kimura U. She is as bright and bubbly in person as I imagined. Her new fashion brand, Kokokim, is booming. You can now order easily thru YesStyle.com. After the Anime Next fashion show she arrived at the Lolita tea party head-to-toe, decked out in her latest styles.

The theme of the tea party was Halloween in June. Several of the girls did pull out their best Halloween coordinates. Lots of witches. One girl stopped me and said she reads my little blog here. {Totally blushing.} Wish I had got her name {if you are reading this let me know!} I thought I had captured a photo of her look but no joy. She made her skirt and an incredible hair piece!!! Very talented.

kimura u gave away her necklace

There were prizes given out for a bi-lingual, sugar-rush round of bingo and a raffle. Kimura got in the act by giving away the very necklace she was wearing. Also, the designers from Galaxxy and Acryl agitt each awarded a prize for best coordinate. Rune was selected by Galaxxy and Aeryn by Acryl agitt. Her pirate ensemble was PERFECT!

A Cup of Tea with Isobe-sama and the BTSSB Designers

animenext tickets to baby the stars shine bright tea party

This weekend was the crescendo to an exhilarating spring.  I’ve been to Tokyo, San Francisco, St. Louis and spent a week in Manhattan.  Enjoyed a lovely sail in the Hudson, started my 5th semester of Japanese, and attended my first “con” AnimeNext. Just in the past 5 days I meet shamisen virtuoso Agatsuma and lolita fashion kami-sama Akinori Isobe.

Baby the Stars Shine Bright Tea Party

It was only by chance that I was able to attend the Baby the Stars Shine Bright Tea Party on Sunday.  My friend Grace was the original owner of the ticket.  But unfortunately she was unable to make it and was sweet enough to extend her ticket to me.  I owe her big time!

baby the stars shine bright tea party

Only 10 precious tickets existed so it was a very intimate affair held in a small room of the hotel hosting AnimeNext.  Everyone gravitated to sitting around the dinning table with a cup of green or black tea in hand.  Isobe-san, the CEO, and his two designers Masumi Kane and Saki Tachibana, stood at one corner of the table entertaining questions from the attendees.  MC Melody Doll and a translator assisted with the conversation.  Petrina of Lolita and the City accompanied the party as press and snapped lots of candids.  Can’t wait to see them.

tea party with the btssb designers

At first there was no mistaking that everyone was nervous.  But gradually the questions became more relaxed and casual.  We learned that Masumi plays piano and takes inspiration from classical music for her design process.  While Saki is influenced by books and spends time in the library and bookstores.  I learned that I had something in common with Isobe-san.  When inquiring about what types of music everyone enjoys, K-Pop and Visual Kei bands for the girls, Isobe-san said he isn’t as much into music these days but was really into techno.  To this I can relate (see my last post.)

baby isobe to kane to tachibana desu

After the tea we all stepped out into the garden for photos.  As you can see there was a group shot, individual shots with the designers, and then some of just the designers.  I wish I had a photo of all the camera’s lined up, waiting their turn; lots and lots of photos should be filling Instagram and Tumblr by now.

The party concluded with the designers handing out small gifts to the attendees.  Inside the little bag was a handkerchief featuring a recent print, an Usakumya snap bracelet, and a small package of cards and notepaper.  We were also given a choice of a poster from either Baby or Alice and the Pirates.

My bag included the navy Twinkle Polaris version of ☆Twinkle Constellation and the Stars of Confeito☆ design.  But Stephanie and I traded.  She likes darker prints but had received the white Dreaming Vega color.  Which means I now have a handkerchief to match the skirt I bought when in Tokyo. Yay!

My Coordinate

tri color toy hat alice and the pirates

The tea party provided me an opportunity to wear my first ever Alice and the Pirates coordinate.  I picked it up on Saturday at the Baby booth in AnimeNext.  I fell in love with the Tricolour Toy hat the minute I saw it.  But turned away as I have nothing to match it.  But then the JSK also lured me in.  All of this with a bit of encouragement by Nancy who was working at the booth.  Well and you can’t stop there, so I ended up with the matching socks too.

Throw in a blouse from Bodyline, red tea parties from Antaina, as well as Angelic Pretty’s Fantastic Ribbon necklace,  and voila!  Felt very English school girl.  I think this is a start of a new love for me.  I am crazy about the pink sweets, but this really felt comfortable, more familiar, somehow more me.  Perhaps I’m a pirate now?!?!

Playing Dress Up @ Alice’s Tea Cup

Today I got to hang out with a friend I hadn’t seen in 10 years!  We worked together in the city ages ago.  As it turns out we both like very much to play dress up.  She just received the most amazing blouse and skirt from London and was itching to take them for a spin.  That sounded like a pretty darn good reason to pull out the frills and pop down to Manhattan and Alice’s Tea Cup Chapter II.

lolita tea party

I reached out to the NY Lolita Community on Facebook and the lovely ladies’ votes came back for Chapter II as their fave location.  I will admit the “mar-tea-nis” were also a deciding factor; Chapter II is the only location with a liquor license.

alices tea cup crepes and marteanis

We order pumpkin pancakes and crepes with gruyere cheese and asparagus.  Very yummy! I definitely want to visit again and try their tea selection and scones.  One of the staff recommended we try Chapter III for our next visit (as one of their staff also likes to sport Victorian attire.)

cupcakes and mar-tea-nis

We had such a great time.  I can’t wait to see her again!!  We are going to loop in some more of the old crowd and try to plan another “very important date” in the near future.

Project Kickoff: Rabbit Print Dress

There are 3 websites that I frequent regularly to find cute Japanese fabric.  The first is Super Buzzy, the second is Fabric Tales, and the third Emi Craft in Japan on Etsy. They all have a very good selection of prints that span from cute animals, to sweets, to fairy tales.  And all these shops carry fabric prints that you will not find in your local JoAnn Fabrics collection.

Rabbit Tea Party Sewing Project

Last month I came across a fabric called Rabbit Tea Party in a black and gray colorway on Emi Craft.  A few clicks, quick checkout with PayPal, and before long it arrived in the post.  It has since stayed tucked away in queue behind several other projects being finished up.  [While I love that inspiration strikes and projects amass, I should know by now that it is so much better if I focus on one thing at a time. Anyway…]

Rabbit Tea Party cute fabric

The challenge with this fabric will be how best to maximize it.  It is a precious 2 yards.  I am not sure if it is possible, but ideally I want to make a one piece dress.  Now for the inspiration – a  favorite Japanese brand, that I would gobble up if it wasn’t for their oh so petite Asian sizing, Emily Temple Cute.

Emily Temple Cute Dress

After browsing Marui One’s online catalog of ETC dresses, came across not only the dress styling I want to mirror but a somewhat similar fabric as well. Stripes and macaroons clearly go well together.

Since I have so little wiggle room for mistakes due to the amount of fabric, this project is going to take some time.  First step will be to find a few patterns that will get the closest shape, then onto a muslin draft, adjust the pattern, and then go for it.

But first things first… got to make it through the work week.
